Group1

Japanese A Literature or Japanese A Language and Literature is offered as a Group 1 subject. Students have the option to choose between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL).

In the context of Japanese education, Japanese language studies or kokugo often recalls activities such as “kanji practice,” “book reports,” or “classical Japanese and Chinese literature”. However, Japanese A within the IB framework adopts a different approach. This subject does not use traditional textbooks. Instead, students work with a selection of approximately 10 to 14 books the teacher chooses including works such as The Metamorphosis and The Man Who Turned Into a Stick. Over a period of twenty-two months , students engage in detailed analysis of these works. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own impressions, explore their interpretations, and think about the significance of the works.

In a Japanese A class, lessons are centred around discussions in which all students are encouraged to participate actively, creating an interactive and collaborative learning environment.
