History and ESS (Environmental System and Society) are offered as a Group 3 subject. Students can select between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL).
Traditional history classes in Japan often emphasize rotememorization. However, in the IB History course, simply memorizing a textbook will not guarantee high scores. Instead, students are encouraged to explore questions like, “Why did this event occur?” and “How does this event influence the present?” This IB subject fosters curiosity and develops the ability to critically analyse and evaluate historical events.
Another appeal of studying History is gaining a global perspective. When interacting with people from other countries, understanding historical facts from a worldwide viewpoint rather than solely a Japanese perspective, enables students to engage in more neutral and meaningful conversations. This approach not only enhances students’ understanding of historical contexts but also hones their analytical skills, allowing them to draw connections between past and present. Students become informed global citizens, capable of thoughtful and insightful discussions on a wide range of historical topics.
Meanwhile, ESS, we study ecosystems, environmental issues, and the related environmental laws. This subject encompasses all science disciplines, yet it has a completely different content from other subjects, making it very interesting to learn.
The most challenging yet enjoyable aspect of this class is that it is discussion-based. The lessons are conducted entirely in English, and there are times when I struggle to express my thoughts clearly or to organize my points in time.
However, my teacher, who is fluent in Japanese and very kind, provides support, allowing me to enjoy the class. In summary, ESS offers a unique curriculum and style, making it a highly rewarding subject to study!
